Im looking to train my 13 week old puppy to go without a leash. How exactly do I do this? When I first got him at 8 weeks, he would do fine outside with no leash. In the last week though hes been running off. He looks at me and then runs like he wants me to chase him. But he dont stop either and just keeps going. How do I train him so that he dont have to be on a leash?

I think with age it will get better.Pups tend to have other things to do.I could be wrong but that's pretty young to think that it will walk right with you with out being leashed.Like i said i could be wrong. Would'nt be the frist time, nor the last.

It can take months to train a really good recall. Put some treats in your pocket and do some training sessions each day teaching the "come" command. Don't try and get him to come to you if you think he has a chance of ignoring you, because that can reinforce the behavior. At this age, he should still be on a leash.

Every puppy I've met will run off if left loose. They are puppies and want to learn by exploring. However, avoid chasing after the puppy, you don't want to reward this behavior. And I'm assuming you live in an area where it is safe to let your dog off leash. Basically, as the dog matures, and if you practice NILIF, and if you give your dog plenty of mental, physical, and social stimulation, he will understand that you are his pack leader. This comes with age and systemmatic practice. For now, I would advise to use a leash. At some point you dog will need to tolerate a leash, either for vet visits, in public, or in group training. And the earlier he learns this, the better. For now, work on basic obedience, and manners. BTW, welcome to our forum.

This question has been asked to me so many times. My dog runs with my on a bike off a leash. Well he's an 8 year old dobermann. That age means he's fully matured and is ready to take on challenges. But honestly, I keep my dog on a leash whenever I walk around the part. Why? It's for their safety. If you trust your dog not to get into trouble, well ask yourself if you trust other dogs too.

Leash training and off leash training is a burden for some. A good socialization stage for your puppy is vital. Make him as friendly as possible. If at around 6 months to a years old and you think he's ready for some good challenging training. Agility, hunting, flyball, name it. With proper training and fluency, it's not really that hard.
